Victoria, BC – In honour of Earth Day on April 22, 2014, over 14,000 students from participating schools across Vancouver Island will work together to clean up their surrounding school neighbourhoods. They will pick up and sort garbage and recyclables, tally the amounts collected and share their results with their community.
“Our students take pride in making their schoolyards and neighbouring green spaces a litter-free environment” said Joan Thain, Vice Principal at Lambrick Park Secondary School. “Taking students outside on Earth Day and making our communities cleaner and safer really makes the connection that the environment needs stewardship and is valued.”
Representatives from Lambrick Park Secondary School and event partners CTV, Tim Hortons, BFI, CRD and Canadian Tire will be on-site for interviews, as well as photo opportunities with students.
Where: Lambrick Park Secondary School
4139 Torquay Dr, Victoria
When: Tuesday, April 22, 2014

In recognition of their hard work and contribution towards creating a healthier, cleaner environment, students will be rewarded with Tim Hortons Timbits to enjoy following the Clean Up. One participating school per district will receive a $500 cash award which can be used for school equipment and supplies, and one lucky teacher from a participating class in each district will receive a $100 Tim Hortons gift card.
Last year, 9,000 students from Campbell River, Comox, Courtenay, Port Alberni, Parksville, Qualicum, Nanaimo, Ladysmith, Duncan and Victoria collected over 1,000 bags of garbage and recycling. Visit vancouverisland.ctvnews.ca/events/community-clean-up-2013 for more information.
