Victoria, BC –The Capital Regional District and District of Central Saanich are launching a pilot project to provide overnight parking at Island View Beach Regional Park. Ten parking spaces are available beginning August 2 for use by kayakers and canoeists planning to launch from the park for overnight excursions.
“The park is a desirable launching spot for kayakers and small boaters paddling in nearby waters, including the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve,” said Central Saanich Mayor Alastair Bryson. “There is a growing demand for convenient, legal overnight vehicle parking spaces at Island View Beach. In response, the District of Central Saanich is pleased to work with the CRD on this pilot project.”
“A draft Interim Park Management Plan has been developed by the CRD for Island View Beach Regional Park,” said Susan Brice, CRD Regional Parks Committee Chair. “It recommends working with the Central Saanich to provide legal overnight parking this purpose; the pilot project is an appropriate first step.”
The overnight parking is located along a section of Homathko Road, immediately north of the campground. Parking passes can be obtained from the District of Central Saanich at a fee of $10/day on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Regional Parks and Central Saanich are collaborating to ensure enforcement and public safety by monitoring the parking, evaluating and responding to visitor use, and assessing the effectiveness of the pilot project.
