SAANICH, BC – Seniors in the Greater Victoria area are celebrating a major step forward on a health care construction project today with a ground breaking ceremony at the construction site of the new Heights at Mt. View residential care facility.
“Today’s ground breaking event marks an exciting milestone in building better care for our seniors and their families,” said Oak Bay – Gordon Head MLA Ida Chong. “Once complete, the 260-bed residential care facility will provide high-quality care in a modern environment, allowing for seniors to live close to their families in the Victoria region.”
The Heights at Mt. View is being built on CRHD-owned land on Carey Road in Saanich. Construction of the $60.5 million facility on Carey Road is now underway and is scheduled to welcome its occupants by December 2014.
“VIHA and our partners in this project - Baptist Housing and the Capital Regional Hospital District - have pulled together and worked hard to get to this day,” said Howard Waldner, President and CEO of VIHA. “This much needed facility will enhance our ability to provide the high-standard of care that our residents need.”
The partnership between VIHA, Baptist Housing and the Capital Regional Hospital District will see the CRHD contribute $18.1 million for capital costs and retain public ownership of the land. The land will be leased for a nominal fee to Baptist Housing for 25 years and VIHA will provide $16 million annual operating funding to Baptist Housing to provide care and related services. Baptist Housing is also making a contribution to the project through a $1.0 million grant.
