Victoria, BC – The Capital Region Housing Corporation (CRHC) is pleased to announce the Official Opening of Vergo Townhomes, the CRHC’s first housing project to be built and operated without ongoing federal or provincial operating subsidies. To mark the occasion, an official opening celebration will be held today at 1:30 pm at 3808 Carey Road.
This new affordable rental housing is made possible through a partnership between the Capital Regional District and the Capital Regional Hospital District, who provided the land for the housing development to the CRHC at no cost as part of the overall re-development of the former Mt. View School site.
The remaining capital cost of Vergo is being funded through a mortgage, the equity from the refinancing of another CRHC owned project and a $270,000 contribution from the Regional Housing Trust Fund.
“Vergo consists of 18 one, two and three bedroom units for families and single persons,” said CRD Board Chair Geoff Young. “Rent levels will be at the low end of the affordable housing market for lower income working families.”
The Vergo project exemplifies green building standards and innovation in sustainable design. The building envelope includes upgraded windows and insulation, which ensures warmth and tranquility within each suite. All suites are enhanced with an abundance of natural light to create a welcoming atmosphere and all the appliances and lighting fixtures meet energy efficiency ratings to reflect a commitment to sustainability. The landscaping includes native drought tolerant plants, a rain garden to filter runoff from the site before it enters the storm drain system and an irrigation system that automatically shuts off when there is rain. The project will receive a LEED designation.
