CRD’s Roundtable on the Environment Identifies Priorities

Victoria, BC The Roundtable on the Environment (RTE) identified environmental priorities for consideration by the Capital Regional District (CRD) at a May 23 meeting with the CRD’s Environmental Sustainability Committee.

The following broad priority areas have been identified for the RTE to provide strategic advice to assist in transformational change towards achieving regional sustainability:

  • Regional Green Space
  • Regional Sustainability Strategy/Regional Climate Change
  • Solid Waste Management

The RTE is considering adding other priority areas, including food security.

“We are very fortunate to have support from this highly-engaged group of influential community leaders,” said Barb Desjardins, Environmental Sustainability Committee Chair. “Their combined backgrounds and experience will contribute greatly to long-term strategic planning.”

The CRD board had previously approved the membership and the terms of reference for the committee for this term of office. The RTE Committee members are: David Moffat, Managing Director at Pacific Carbon Trust; Andrew Weaver, lead author for the United Nations panel on climate change, author of Keeping Our Cool: Canada in a Warming World, and professor and research chair in climate modelling and analysis at University of Victoria; Lynn Bailey, former Assistant Deputy Minister of the Environmental Protection Division for the BC Ministry of Environment; Ted Sheldon, Special Advisor to Communities with the BC Ministry of Environment’s Climate Action Secretariat; Jim Hayhurst, Vice-President, Business Development and Global Service at Triton Logging; Eric Bonham, founding member of the Convening for Action on Vancouver Island leadership team and former Director with the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Community Services; and Nancy Wilkin, Executive in Residence at Royal Roads Office of Sustainability and former Assistant Deputy Minister for the Ministry of Environment.
