Victoria, BC – Victoria, BC – The Capital Regional District (CRD) is mailing new 2012-2014 curbside recycling schedules to over 114,000 homes in the region. Collection days and materials accepted will largely remain the same; however, new materials (polycoated containers, which include milk and soup cartons, drink boxes and gable top containers) have been added to the program.
“Thanks to high participation by our local residents, the CRD blue box program has been a tremendous success story,” says Barbara Desjardins, Chair of the CRD Environmental Sustainability Committee. “Since its inception in 1989, the program has diverted almost 260,000 tonnes of recyclable materials. That is the equivalent of over 40,000 garbage trucks that did not go to the landfill. Recycling results in a longer life for Hartland landfill and a more sustainable environment for all of us.”
The 2012-2014 recycling schedule will be mailed to all homes on the curbside program, except for Oak Bay which distributes its own schedule at a different time. The blue box recycling program accepts the following materials:
- Newspapers and mixed papers in the blue bag
- Plastic packaging and plastic, metal and glass containers (including lids) and polycoated containers (new in the blue box)
- Cardboard and pizza boxes, bundled and placed beside the blue box
