Victoria, BC - The Capital Regional District (CRD) Housing Action Team invites residents to tour a garden suite display in Centennial Square from Tuesday, March 13 to Saturday, March 17. Suite owner Small Modern Living Inc. will be onsite to facilitate the tours and answer questions about this new affordable housing opportunity. Tours will run daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Garden suites are self-contained second dwelling units that are separate, subordinate in size and accessory to the principal dwelling unit. The unit may be a free-standing structure, or may be located beside or behind the principal dwelling unit.
The housing concept of a garden suite has been popular in Europe, Australian and North American municipalities for decades and is currently gaining traction in the Metro Vancouver area, with an estimated 1,500 garden suites approved.
Growth management, increased housing options, and the use of existing infrastructure are key benefits of these units. The suites also offer comfortable living conditions in energy efficient and cost effective spaces.
The CRD Housing Action Team was created in late 2007. The purpose of the team is to work as a catalyst and initiator of development, retention and acquisition of housing that is affordable for those households in the region with low or moderate household incomes.
Implementation of garden suites in the CRD requires municipal approval.
