Victoria, BC - The Capital Regional District’s (CRD) Salt Spring Island Electoral Area has awarded a construction contract to Knappett Projects Inc. in the amount of $5.48 million for the construction of the New Salt Spring Island Public Library building.
“I am delighted to see this project move forward,” said Salt Spring Island Director Garth Hendren. “A new library facility on Salt Spring Island is long overdue and will serve as a community hub for island residents for decades to come.” The new two story building will have 12,500 square feet of floor space and be built to equivalent LEED Gold Sustainability standards. The building will house the library, a broad range of services and meeting rooms and the Salt Spring Island Historical Society Archives.
To make ready for construction, the current library will relocate temporarily to 118 Jackson Road, effective July 2011. The Salt Spring Island Public Library Association (SSIPLA) will be managing the move. Construction on the new building is scheduled to begin in July 2011 and continue for 16 months.
“The awarding of the building contract represents the next to final step in a lengthy process that began with a Board decision in 1999,” said Rita Archer, Board Chair, SSIPLA. “The Library Building Project has been many years in the making and is the culmination of countless volunteer hours by both the Building Committee and the Library Association Board working together with the CRD.”
Previous milestones in the project include establishment of a library building fund, purchase of the property adjacent to the current site, raising of $250,000 to help cover the cost of that acquisition, receipt of a $4.55 million grant from the Canada/BC Building Canada Fund and, most recently, a 78% "yes" vote in a December 2009 referendum that supported borrowing by the community to contribute the remaining funding needed for the project.
