Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators Recognizes Leadership Development Program
Halifax, NS – A unique leadership development program, designed in partnership with Royal Roads University to give leaders in the municipal sector the skills needed to deal with the challenges facing municipal organizations today, has earned the Capital Regional District on Vancouver Island national recognition.
The Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators (CAMA) has presented the Capital Regional District (CRD), Vancouver Island, BC with its 2011 Education Award, sponsored by Citi Canada, for the iLead Leadership Development Program. The award was presented on June 1 at CAMA’s national conference held in Halifax, NS.
“CAMA is pleased to recognize the innovation and administrative excellence demonstrated by the Victoria CRD for this training partnership,” said Jacques Des Ormeaux, president of the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators, CAMA director-at-large, and General Manager of the City of Bromont, QC. “Investing in leadership and developing strong leaders is paramount to any organization’s continued successes. The Capital Regional District on Southern Vancouver Island is setting the bar for other municipalities.”
The iLead Leadership Development Program was developed as part of a strategic priority of Organizational Effectiveness for CRD. “iLead” is a comprehensive nine day interactive program focussed on enhancing leadership capacity and aligning CRD leaders with a common set of leadership competencies. The program focuses both individual and collective leadership strengths, participants are immersed in a Leadership Challenge which actively applies their learning to real life workplace challenges.
Launched in January 2009, seventy-three (73) of the CRD’s current and up-and-coming managers have participated in the program. In the municipal organization’s most recent employee survey, employee satisfaction with the leadership had increased eleven per cent in 18 months. “I am extremely pleased to welcome Citi Canada as the gold sponsor presenting our education awards this year,” said Patrick Moyle, Chair of CAMA’s Awards Committee and Chief Administrative Officer for the Regional Municipality of Halton, ON. “Overall, a total of 45 award submissions were received from communities across Canada for our awards program this year. That’s 16 more entries than last year. The interest in the program grows each year as well as the quality of submissions.”
CAMA’s Education Award fosters the development of a library of educational materials for Canadian municipal administrators on subjects of specific interest to CAMA members. Because Canada has a unique mixture of small and large communities, awards are granted according to population – for municipalities under 20,000, for those between 20,001 and 100,000 and for those over 100,000. Certificates of Merit may also be awarded.
A Canada-wide network and the national voice of senior municipal administrators, the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators (CAMA) strives to nurture and build municipal administrative excellence by providing its more than 480 members with knowledge sharing and learning opportunities, access to best practices, and valued input into policies and programs aimed at ensuring healthy and thriving communities across Canada.
