CRD Announces the 2009 Ecostar Award Winners

Victoria, BC- On the eve of Earth Week celebrations, April 21, the Capital Regional District hosted the 2009 EcoStar Awards at Royal Roads University to recognize outstanding commitment to the environment.

 ‘A’ British Columbia’s Astrid Braunschmidt, was the event Emcee; the keynote speaker was Geoff Green, noted Canadian environmentalist and explorer.

Mayor Alice Finall, Chair of the CRD Environment Committee welcomed event guests: “By recognizing our most committed environmental leaders, we can focus on the power we have as individuals and as a community to make a positive change in the world. Thus, this is a time of hope for all of us.”

The 2009 EcoStar Awards Ceremony was entirely paperless, featured local food and beverages, and honoured nine award recipients:

  • Climate Action & Energy Conservation Award: Sponsored by 103.1 Jack FM - T’Sou-ke Nation
  • Environmental Education Award: Sponsored by BC Transit - Glenlyon Norfolk School
  • Water Stewardship Award: Sponsored by City of Victoria – Lester B. Pearson United World College of the Pacific
  • Land Stewardship Award: Sponsored by A British Columbia - Habitat Acquisition Trust
  • Environmental Innovation Award: Sponsored by 98.5 The Ocean - SPOKES Program, University of Victoria
  • Waste Reduction Award: Sponsored by Refuse - Royal Oak Middle School
  • Youth Achievement Individual Award: Sponsored by Coast Capital Savings - Maia Carolsfeld
  • Youth Achievement Group Award: Sponsored by Royal Roads University - Power To Be Adventure Therapy
  • Lifetime Achievement Award: Sponsored by the Capital Regional District - Garry Fletcher

The CRD’s EcoStar Community Environmental Awards recognize outstanding achievements and contributions by local businesses, groups and individuals to enhancing our environment. The CRD has held the EcoStar Awards since 2000. Previous winners of the Lifetime Achievement Award have included David Anderson, former Minister of Environment and Bill Turner, founder of The Land Conservancy of BC.
