Victoria, BC – CRD Environmental Services General Manager Dwayne Kalynchuk, who has been directing the Core Area Wastewater Treatment Project since its inception, will now be working full time on the project. Environmental Services Senior Manager Larisa Hutcheson will step in as acting General Manager in Kalynchuk’s stead.
“2009 will be a year of important decisions and definitive action for the CRD’s Core Area wastewater treatment project,” said Kalynchuk, “As part of the planning process, I will be concentrating my efforts on this project, in order to ensure that this year’s decisions and consultation sessions are given adequate time.”
“I am glad to see that the CRD is dedicating resources to this project,” said Core Area Liquid Waste Management Committee Chair Judy Brownoff. “By allowing staff to focus their energy, we will ensure that planning, community dialogue and decision making for wastewater treatment moves forward.”
Kalynchuk has participated in over 35 public meetings and stakeholder forums since 2007, educating members of the public and community associations on the wastewater project and its progress. Extensive public outreach and consultation is planned for the spring and fall of 2009. Kalynchuk will also be working closely with engineering consultants on options for the number, size and location of treatment plants, as well as resource recovery opportunities for wastewater.
The CRD is planning for wastewater treatment in the Core Area municipalities of Colwood, Esquimalt, Langford, Oak Bay, Saanich, View Royal and Victoria. An amendment to the current Core Area Liquid Waste Management Plan is required by the Province by December 31, 2009.
