Victoria, BC - Beginning January 22, 2009 public art in Greater Victoria will be available to the public anywhere in the world. A new website will allow anyone with web access and a browser to view the over 80 pieces of public art work on display in the Capital Region.
The new website www.LandmarksPublicArt.ca features artworks in Victoria, Saanich and Esquimalt that have been created as a result of their public art programs. Public art in Oak Bay is slated to be added in the very near future.
The web-based, searchable inventory will be of interest to visitors, local residents, students, researchers and anyone else with an interest in the arts, public or otherwise. Interested individuals can also find information, where it exists, on the public art policies of eachmunicipality.
The Landmarks website is a cooperative initiative of the municipalities who support the Arts Development Service of the Capital Regional District and is an extension of the LandMarks lecture series which presents speakers and discussions on a wide range of topics relating to public art.
The Capital Regional District is comprised of 13 municipalities and three electoral districts on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Seven municipalities, Victoria, Saanich, Oak Bay, Esquimalt, View Royal, Metchosin and Highlands contribute to the Capital Regional District Arts Development Service of which four have public art or “Percent for Art” policies in place.
