Victoria, BC- As part of the 2010 Olympic Legacy the Province of British Columbia and the Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC) have announced that an agreement has been reached to fund a 35 unit supportive housing project within the Capital Regional District (CRD). Several projects were announced to be developed throughout the Province, with a total capital cost of approximately $43.6 million. The portion of this project within the Capital Region is planned to be located in the District of Saanich and will cost approximately $9.6 million.
This agreement is made possible by the participation of a number of government and corporate partners and proposes to reconfigure and relocate temporary modular housing units from the Olympic and Paralympic Village at Whistler into high-quality permanent buildings around the province. BC Housing will assume the costs for the design, relocation, site work, and modifications of these modular units into Legacy housing, ensuring that they meet high sustainable standards, promoting energy efficiency and minimizing environmental impact.
Following a comprehensive development options review, the Capital Regional Hospital District (CRHD) for the CRD has prepared a concept plan for the development of the former Mount View School site, land assembled and owned by the CRHD, located at 3814/3818 Carey Road. Consistent with the CRD's Regional Growth Strategy and the new Saanich Official Community Plan, the concept plan proposes:
- 35 Supportive housing apartments for homeless persons, with 24/7 staffing
- 244 bed residential care home
- 129 suite independent living facility for seniors
- Mix of other uses to be determined including housing, office and other care facilities
The CRHD will undertake the rezoning process for the site this fall and consideration of the rezoning proposal will begin shortly thereafter. The District of Saanich has committed to giving immediate consideration to this proposal, with community consultation.
The CRD is committed to working with stakeholders and agencies, including the Greater Victoria Coalition to End Homelessness, who is assisting in the development and delivery of services to supportive housing proposals throughout the CRD.
More detailed information on the draft concept proposal is available on the CRD’s website. Mount View Project
