Victoria, BC – The Capital Regional District is thrilled with the turnout for Hartland Landfill’s third annual open house, which took place on Saturday, September 13. Over 1600 people attended the Hartland Happening, which featured landfill tours, education booths, games and crafts for children and a free barbeque.
“Spectacular weather and increasing community awareness of sustainable practices by CRD residents contributed to Hartland Happening’s success,” said Dave Saunders. “Turnout was much higher than expected—it was a big challenge, but CRD staff and volunteers rose to the occasion.”
Due to the public’s increased interest in sustainability, in Hartland Landfill’s workings and in recycling programs, subsequent Hartland open house events will include improved accessibility and parking.
The CRD would like to thank the BC Lions Society for preparing great hotdogs and hamburgers for all attendees. Thanks are also due to the CRD’s supporters: A Channel, Black Press, Jack FM, and The Ocean, as well as Level Ground Trading, who provided organic, fair trade coffee. A special thank you is due to the Prospect Lake Community Association and to neighbours along Hartland Avenue for their patience, understanding and participation in this exciting event.
