Victoria, BC- Capital Regional District Core Area Liquid Waste Management Committee Chair Chris Clement announced today that the CRD has received a deadline extension for submission of the Amendment to the Core Area Liquid Waste Management plan by 12 months. The new deadline is December 31, 2009. Project completion will continue to be scheduled for 2016.
BC Environment Minister Barry Penner acknowledged the CRD’s commendable work in the Program Development Phase Report, which included an overview of progress made up to June 1, 2008, a response to the minister’s plan for meeting the six wastewater objectives and a revised schedule for completion of the Program Development Phase of wastewater treatment.
The Minister particularly noted the CRD’s commitment to exploring resource recovery, beneficial reuse and greenhouse gas reduction strategies and to providing thorough and responsible consultation with First Nations. Recognizing this commitment, the Minister granted the one year extension.
“I am very pleased that the CRD has received an extension from the province on this project,” said Clement. “Wastewater treatment is an enormous undertaking. We have made significant progress over the last year, which the minister has recognized. The extension will enable the CRD to complete planning decisions in an adequate amount of time, thus ensuring that we find the best social, environmental and economic value for taxpayers in the Core Area.”
A Wastewater Treatment Progress Report will be published by the CRD by the end of 2008.
