Low Water and Drought Conditions: Skana Water System (Mayne Island)

Sep 03, 2021

Residents on the Skana Water System are required to further reduce outdoor water use.

The Skana Water System water supply is now at critically low levels due to the current drought conditions. Given the current state of your water source we are seeking your cooperation to further reduce water usage to avoid near loss or complete loss of supply. To limit or avoid trucking in water, at significant cost, please practice the following enhanced water conservation measures until further notice.

Residents are required to conserve water outdoors as follows:

  • No outdoor water use at all except for very limited watering of vegetable gardens with a container.
  • All other Stage 3 restrictions remain in effect.

What else can you do?

  • Use mulch to keep the moisture in the ground around plant beds, trees and shrubs.
  • Recycle water wherever you can: install water catchment systems, keep pails and buckets handy to catch extra water.
  • Remind tenants, visitors and guests of the need to conserve water with shorter showers.
  • Avoid potential water loss catastrophes by shutting off the water at the main when leaving town for more than a day.
  • Work towards a further reduction in water use indoors.
