RESOLVED: Ganges (Salt Spring Island) Wastewater Discharge Notice

Jan 02, 2022 (updated Jan 19, 2022, 8:38am)

Residents are no longer required to avoid the affected areas.

A spill of wastewater occurred at the Ganges Wastewater Treatment Plant on Salt Spring Island on Jan 2. A mechanical failure of part of the above ground piping system, likely as a result of the current cold temperatures, was the root cause of the spill. Much of the volume was contained on site, but some sewage ran overland, entering the storm water system leading from the facility to Ganges Creek and out to Ganges Harbour.

In consultation with Island Health, the public health advisory has been lifted.
