Many studies have been undertaken on Esquimalt Lagoon and its surrounding watersheds. Some of these have been sponsored by ELSI and undertaken by local professionals, others are student reports from Royal Roads University, Camosun College and the University of Victoria.

In 1997 a 2 year bird survey of Esquimalt Lagoon, Esquimalt and Victoria harbours, Gorge Waterway and Portage Inlet was initiated. Every two months observers enumerated birds using the harbours and waterways, and results were compiled and presented on the Harbours Atlas (now part of the CRD Regional Map). Starting in 2019, the CRD Harbours Program is repeating this survey over a two year period with monthly surveys in all harbour areas.
