Stormwater Quality Monitoring and Reporting

Stormwater Quality Monitoring

Sampling waterEach year, designated stormwater discharges are visited and evaluated for both public health concern and environmental concern throughout the Capital Region.

Public Health Concern

Water samples are collected during the winter and summer. A water sample is collected from the point of discharge and analyzed for fecal coliform concentrations. Each discharge is rated low, moderate or high based on the level of contamination in the stormwater and the potential for human contact with it.

Environmental Concern

Sediment samples are collected at the point of discharge during the summer. Sampling locations are chosen based on the discharges proximity to environmentally sensitive areas or are heavily used for recreational activities. Samples are analyzed for eight metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The results are then compared to marine sediment quality guidelines for protection of aquatic life. The discharge is then rated as either low, moderate or high based on the chemical contaminant concentration and other factors including; habitat sensitivity, discharge flow and marine flushing.

Major Watercourses

Major watercourses throughout the capital region are monitored twice annually at the point of discharge and at other key locations for fecal coliform, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, specific conductance, turbidity, nitrate-nitrogen and phosphorus. The water quality measurements are compared to provincial or federal guidelines for the protection of aquatic life, and are used as an indication of creek health and to monitor for change over time.

Nearshore Marine Monitoring

Nearshore surface water sampling is conducted in Esquimalt Lagoon and Esquimalt and Victoria harbours twice annually and on both ebb and flood tides. Fecal coliform bacteria concentrations are measured to assess potential impacts of stormwater discharges on marine water quality and to monitor for change over time.

Annual Reports

CRD staff prepare annual reports based on stormwater quality monitoring for various areas.

As these are reports are large files, they have been provided on this website as separate smaller files to facilitate downloading.
