Rainwater Management Techniques Used

Esquimalt Gorge Park

Daylighting/Restoration

The end portion of a pre-existing stream was daylighted in order to reduce contaminant levels in stormwater entering the Gorge Waterway intertidal zone, and increase opportunities for passive recreation. Deep pools allow sediments to settle out while wetland area plants and microbes help break down pollutants such as hydrocarbons. Right after completion in December 2005, extreme tides, winds and rains combined to create huge stormwater flows and high receiving water levels. The system performed very well.
