Codes of Practice

Regional Source Control program codes of practice are defined as “regulatory documents containing mandatory sanitary sewer discharge standards for specific industrial, institutional or commercial sectors.” These codes have been developed with input from sector stakeholders and they generally include requirements for registration, waste treatment, inspection, maintenance and record keeping for a wide range of smaller facilities that discharge wastes to sanitary sewer. A specified number of facilities within each sector are inspected by program staff each year for compliance with the applicable codes.

By December 2004, the Board had adopted eleven codes of practice under the Sewer Use Bylaw. The types of businesses regulated, the associated contaminants, main impacts and adoption and effective dates of these codes are summarized below:
