Sewer & Wastewater Energy Recovery Projects in the Capital Region
Saanich Peninsula Thermal Energy Recovery Project
The CRD constructed a district energy system at the Saanich Peninsula Wastewater Treatment Plant to provide thermal energy to Panorama Recreation Centre.
Treated effluent is pumped through a heat exchanger system, where the thermal heat is transferred to a potable water loop. The loop serves as an energy storage reservoir. The project was completed in 2011 and was constructed to allow for future expansion of the system. Read more ![]()
Trent Forcemain Sewer
To prevent wastewater overflows as required by the Municipal Sewage Regulation, the CRD is proposing to construct a new forcemain from Trent St. southwest to St. Charles and Chandler Streets.
A new main sewer line is required to increase capacity within the northeast trunk sewage collection system which was built in 1912. The new line will prevent sewage overflows, protect human health and safeguard the environment. Read more
Trent Pump Station
The Capital Regional District (CRD) is working with municipal staff and community groups on plans for a new pump station on Trent Street to accommodate existing and future sewerage system capacity needs in Victoria, Saanich, and Oak Bay.
This upgrade to the northeast trunk sewage collection system (built
in 1912) is necessary to prevent wastewater overflows and to protect
human health and the environment.

Bowker Relief Sewer (Completed 2006)
The Bowker sewer was constructed in 1912 and serves Oak Bay, Victoria, and Saanich. The sewer had served the region well, but needed capacity and structural upgrades to meet current flows and standards.
These upgrades took place in 2005 and the work was completed in 2006. The CRD worked closely with staff from Victoria, Saanich, and Oak
Bay; Bowker Creek Urban Watershed Renewal Initiative (BCI); and other
community groups. Read more
