Monitoring and Assessment
The scientists and technical staff who work for the CRD’s Environmental Services Department include staff in Marine Programs with a range of technical and research experience. These scientists monitor the impact on the marine environment of wastewater discharged through the CRD’s sewer systems and analyze the findings.
This detailed scientific monitoring and analysis is used to assess environmental effects or risks to public health and to protect the marine environment. It informs the CRD’s Regional Source Control Program and provides scientific guidance to managers involved in the disposal of municipal wastewater.
The recent Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) report said that overall, the CRD’s program to evaluate the effects of wastewater in marine environments is one of the most comprehensive programs being implemented anywhere in the world.
The studies ensure that the CRD complies with BC Ministry of Environment requirements and with commitments in liquid waste management plans for Greater Victoria and the Saanich Peninsula.
CRD’s Marine Programs works with universities and government agencies to study emerging scientific issues regarding wastewater discharges and potential environmental effects. This includes studies to assess potential impacts on the marine environment from emerging chemicals such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products.
Objectives
The objectives of Marine Programs monitoring and assessment are to:
- Assess the effects of the wastewater discharges on the marine environment and human health.
- Provide information to the CRD Regional Source Control Program.
- Provide scientific guidance to wastewater managers regarding the use of the marine environment for the disposal of municipal wastewater
