How We Do It and What We Are Finding
The Marine Programs monitoring and assessment efforts meet the specific needs of each of the CRD's eight outfalls.
While wastewater treatment is designed to reduce suspended solids and biochemical oxygen demand, it is not as effective in removing chemicals, metals or other substances. Many of the substances monitored by Marine Programs are generally found in wastewater from any treatment plant, including those with secondary or tertiary treatment.
Macaulay & Clover Point
Wastewater has been discharged just off Macaulay and Clover Point since the beginning of the twentieth century, and through the two long outfalls since 1971. Read more

Southern Gulf Islands & Port Renfrew
The CRD operates four treatment plants on the Southern Gulf Islands and one treatment plant on the west coast of Vancouver Island, in Port Renfrew, which discharge treated wastewater to the ocean. Read more
