Southern Gulf Islands & Port Renfrew
The CRD operates five small secondary treatment plants in Ganges Harbour and at Maliview on Saltspring Island, at Cannon Crescent and Schooner Way on Pender Island and at Port Renfrew.
Treated wastewater from these plants is monitored for flow, total suspended solids (TSS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and fecal coliform bacteria, and nutrients. These parameters are monitored monthly for every facility except Maliview where it is done every three months.
General findings
Monitoring results show that the treatment facilities on the Southern Gulf Islands and Port Renfrew have good effluent quality. Requirements under the BC Municipal Sewage Regulation are met. High flows to certain treatment plants in the winter sometime cause disruptions in the disinfection process. However, staff work hard to deal with these issues.
Monitoring results for each treatment plant are presented in the annual Southern Gulf Islands and Port Renfrew Wastewater and Marine Environment Program report.
