Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - School Program

The CRD, through its 3R School Outreach Program, is pleased to offer free of charge, Grades K-12 interactive workshops and interpretive tours that support BC Ministry of Education learning outcomes for social studies, personal planning, language arts, science and math. Actively promoting waste reduction and recycling education to students and educators for more than a decade, this program is one of many initiatives in place to reduce the amount of waste generated and disposed of in the Capital Region.
The Hartland Learning Centre
The Hartland Learning Centre was opened during waste reduction week on October 18, 2011 at Hartland landfill
This new centre is now available for classroom and group CRD presentations. The building is a recycled former cottage from Langford, which was once a fully functional residential home. Once trucked to the landfill in June of 2009, the CRD transformed the kitchen into washrooms, and all walls were removed to make the classroom you see around you.
Construction of the building, and all its components, was completed in September of 2011, with many sustainable materials, including recycled windows, counter tops and cupboards, low flow toilets, donated furniture, a rainwater collection system, which deposits water into a cistern below the deck, and native plant landscaping.
There is also a possibility, in the future, of using the cistern water for toilet flushing and of installing a green roof.
Environmental education is of paramount importance to the CRD, and the Hartland Learning Centre will allow for place-based learning, which gives our youth and our communities a chance for experiential, interactive involvement in education.
Place-based learning links a learner to the space around them, creating awareness of natural and social history and the relation of our community with the rest of the world.
The Learning centre is expected to host approximately 100 school workshops for over 3,000 participants every year, as well as community workshops and tours.
