Telephone Book Recycling Program

In 2012 the Capital Regional District (CRD) will be discontinuing the telephone directories recycling program. Since the program began in 1989, non-profit organizations and schools have diverted over 1.8 million directories in order to raise funds for their programs. No easy feat considering the size of the directories, and we congratulate you on your continued efforts to keep this material out of the landfill.

The CRD will continue to offer twenty cents for each telephone book collected until 30 June 2012. As of 01 July 2012 the program will no longer be available and books can be recycled through the residential blue box program and commercial recycling venues.

Who Can Apply?

Non-profit organizations (schools, community associations, social clubs, environmental groups) can all apply.

What is the Telephone Book Recycling Program?

This is an opportunity for non-profit organizations to raise funds through the Capital Regional District’s telephone book recycling program.

How much funding does the program provide?

The CRD offers twenty cents for each book collected.

What books are accepted?

All last year and previous years’ Victoria area telephone books (aka SuperPages, Telephone Directories, yellow pages, white pages, TELUS pages) qualify for funding.

What is not accepted?

Current year telephone books, postal code directories, MLS books, telephone books from other regions or any other directories do not qualify for this funding.

What do I do with extra telephone books from the current year?

Many companies will pick up the extra telephone books and redistribute them. Call the directory company for details.

Current telephone books may also be recycled, however, they do not qualify for funding.

Is there a minimum or maximum number of books?

Telephone books must be brought in minimum quantities of 100 or more. This can be 50 Telus books and 50 SuperPages books or any other combination as long as it is at least 100 books. There is no maximum.

Why participate?

In 2009, participating groups collected 44,719 telephone books. That’s nearly 62 tonnes of phone books diverted from the landfill. And all groups benefited by receiving funding for their efforts.

How do I apply?

Contact the CRD Hotline at 250-360-3030 or Email email to schedule an appointment to drop off your books. You will be asked to provide the total number of Telus books and the total number of SuperPages books you’ll be dropping off. Appointments must be scheduled each time you wish to drop off books.

Where do I take the books?

Books are collected at Hartland landfill at #1 Hartland Avenue. Appointments are made for Fridays (9am to 4:30pm) and Saturdays (8am to 1:30pm)

How should books be prepared for drop off?

All books must be free from packaging, no books in plastic wrap or strapping will be accepted. Please keep separate tallies of how many Telus books and how many SuperPages books you have. If transporting books in an open pick-up or trailer please be sure your load is tarped & secured.

What can I expect when I arrive at Hartland?

Check in with the scale attendant at the public scale system where your vehicle will be weighed prior to unloading your books. You will be directed to the appropriate bin area for unloading. Please come prepared to unload your own books.

Once books have been unloaded, proceed back to the scale to weigh out. When you check out with the scale attendant you will be given a scale receipt as proof of drop off. If you do not weigh out, we may not be able to pay you for your load.

For safety reasons, pets and children are to remain inside vehicles.

Is there a deadline?

You can collect books throughout the year and schedule appointments as needed, as long as you have a minimum of 100 books.

When is funding paid?

Funding is processed at the end of each month.
