Household Organics Collection

The CRD conducted a two year pilot program for the collection of household organics. Over 700 tonnes of food waste and soiled paper products were diverted from Hartland landfill during the pilot program.
What's next?
Both the District of Oak Bay and the Town of View Royal are continuing with the collection of household organics in pilot areas until a more permanent arrangement for dealing with organics is in place.
The CRD is working toward a 30% reduction in waste entering the Hartland landfill and it is expected that a ban on organics at Hartland will be in place by 2012. The CRD will be working with stakeholder groups in 2009 to determine best how to continue the organics collection program.
Oak Bay Residents
In Oak Bay the use of compostable bags is mandatory, when disposing of household organics in curbside totes. Oak Bay residents can purchased bags at the Public Works Yard.
View Royal Residents
In View Royal, the use of compostable bags is also mandatory.
Alternatives for Other CRD Residents

Organic material (food waste and soiled paper products) currently makes up 30% of the garbage going to Hartland landfill. Much of this material is not suitable for backyard composting but can be processed in a controlled composting facility.
Composting facilities with specialized technology to process such materials are operating on Vancouver Island. There is now an alternative to landfilling organics that cannot be composted at home.
Residents outside of the pilot areas in View Royal and Oak Bay who would like to separate their organics for collection may contract a private company. See the Recycling Directory for more details on organics collection.
