Water System Improvements Underway (Status as of April 25, 2012)

Upgrades to the Lyall Harbour/Boot Cove Water System are underway with completion anticipated in the spring 2012. Two projects are running concurrently:

Balancing Reservoir (construction started in December, 2011).

The supply and construction of a 30,000 imperial gallon bolted steel balancing reservoir located adjacent to the existing fire storage tank on the hill above the Saturna Recreation Centre was awarded to Stone Pacific Contracting Ltd in October 2011, in the amount of $288,495. This reservoir will even out (balance) the high and low flows in the water system enabling a more consistent flow through the treatment plant and improved quality of water at the tap. The tank has now been constructed at the site and is currently being tested and disinfected to enable it to be put in service in May 2012.

Water Treatment (construction started in December, 2011)

The water treatment process upgrade works were awarded in October 2011, to Pye Construction Ltd in the amount of $458,875. These works will provide improvements to the treatment process including improved disinfection, replacement of filter media, reduction of the treatment process flow rate, capture of the seepage water below Money Lake #1 dam and re-plumbing of the existing treatment building at Narvaez Bay/Harris Road. Construction started in December 2011, with work below Money Lake #1 dam and at the Walter Ratzlaff treatment building.  Work is progressing slowly with changes required due to the condition of the existing filter tanks which were unsuitable for re-use and needed replacement.

The first set of filters will be completed in early May with the second set and commissioning of the works scheduled for May-June 2012.
