Salt Spring Island Liquid Waste Disposal
Salt Spring Island has its own liquid waste disposal plant, which treats and disposes of semi solid sewage waste collected from two treatment plants and lots on the island which are on private septic systems. Over 5500 lots use the service. Waste sludge is also periodically received from the two Magic Lake Estates sewage treatment plants on North Pender Island.
The service is based on the Burgoyne Septage Disposal Facility. The facility separates semi solid waste into solid and liquid components. The liquid waste is routed to a plant that finally produces water of near potable quality. This effluent is dispersed in a ground disposal field. The solid waste is trucked off the island to a composting facility in Mill Bay.
CRD Environmental Services staff operate the service. The Local Service Commission administers the service, recommends policies, levels of user charges, and frontage or parcel taxes.
