Salt Spring Island Transportation Programs
The Salt Spring Island Transportation Commission (SSITC) is committed to safe infrastructure for walkers, cyclists, and drivers that provides alternatives to personal vehicles and promotes road safety. Hindered by narrow and busy island roads, Salt Spring Island is in need of coordinated programs to improve infrastructure, including public walkways and bicycle paths.
Creation of the Commission permitted the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) to award the CRD a License of Occupation for sidewalks on MOTI property. The Commission works closely with the coordinating organization, Partners Creating Pathways (PCP), to plan new island pathways. PCP collects donations from other island organizations and societies including the SSTC, to cover construction costs.

Park and Ride at the Fulford Inn
The Transportation Commission has established a Park and Ride in the parking lot of the Fulford Inn located at 2661 Fulford Ganges Rd. Parking spaces are available from 6am – 6pm Monday through Saturday. Bus riders can leave their cars at the Park and Ride and then catch the bus to Ganges at the bus stop in front of the Fulford Inn.
Pathway between Wildwood Crescent and Blain Road
In 2008, a pathway was constructed along Lower Ganges Road between Wildwood Crescent and Blain Road. This pathway now provides a safe route for residents of nearby homes and Brinkworthy Village to travel by foot, scooter or wheelchair to the Country Grocer Shopping Centre.
The SSITC provided funding to this project that was coordinated by Partners Creating Pathways. Other funders included the CRD, Salt Spring Island Foundation, Victoria Foundation, BC Transmission Corporation, PARC, Lions Club, Royal Canadian Legion, Allteck Line Contractors, and individual community members.
Pathways on Blain Road and Crofton Road
In 2009, two new walkways were created along Blain and Crofton roads, connecting three seniors' residential facilities and the hospital to one another and to a major shopping centre.
The SSITC partnered with Island Pathways, the CRD, the Salt Spring Trail and Nature Club, and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, to make these walkways possible. In addition to funds from the SSITC, financial support came from the B.C. government, the CRD Director’s grants-in-aid budget, PARC, Salt Spring Island Foundation, BC Transmission Corporation, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 92, TD Friends of the Environment Fund, Van City, Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and the Salt Spring Lions Club.
