Mary Hawkins Library

Funding
The present library is owned and operated by the Salt Spring Island Public Library Association. The Association receives substantial operating funding from a CRD tax levy on Salt Spring Island. It also receives a per capita provincial grant. Other sources of funds include targeted grants, donations of books and cash, book sales and fines from overdue materials.
In 2005 a referendum was held on Salt Spring Island and the community approved a CRD by law to borrow funds for the CRD to purchase a parcel of land in Ganges that will be leased to the Library Association for a new library facility. The Association is incorporated under the BC Library Act and is independent of the CRD with its own constitution and directors.
The Electoral Area Director for Salt Spring Island sits on the Association’s board.

Overview
The CRD provides annual funding to Salt Spring Island Arts to contribute towards the ArtSpring Theatre and the Gulf Islands Community Arts Council. The CRD owns the land that ArtSpring is situated on and there is a ten year license of occupation with the Arts Centre Society.
Salt Spring Island has a lively and dedicated arts scene; a main hub of this scene is ArtSpring, run by the Island Arts Centre Society. ArtSpring is a 12, 000 square foot structure which houses an exhibition/multi-purpose area and a 265-seat theatre. The centre is often rented by local professionals, amateurs, school groups, guilds and visual artists. Events presented by ArtSpring are chosen to complement, enhance and diversify what is already available through local arts organizations. Activities and performances include music, dance, theatre, spoken word, readings, visual arts shows and a variety of classes.
