Fire Protection

On Salt Spring Island fire protection is provided by a local improvement district, which operates independently of the CRD. Salt Spring Island Fire and Rescue is responsible for fire protection and the coordination of emergency programs for all residents.

Summer Fire Restrictions
Salt Spring Island is at risk from wildfires during the summer months — report any fire or smoke immediately by calling 9-1-1.
No Open Burning from July 1 - September 30
Outdoor fires, including campfires, require a valid permit and are subject to BC Forestry closures at any time. Open air burning is also prohibited on Canada Day, BC Day and Labour Day holidays.
Please check with local fire departments for other closures and restrictions before lighting any fire or using equipment in and around forest areas.
Permits
Permits are often not required from October 1 to April 15 of each year but this decision is left up to the discretion of the Fire Chief.
Permits can be obtained free of charge by attending in person to SSIFD Hall 1 in Ganges.
