Origin Destination Household Travel Surveys
1992-2006
Overview
Household travel surveys are conducted for the Capital Regional District and the municipalities to collect household travel information on the 376,000 residents in this region to improve land use and transportation planning. The primary focus of the household survey is to update the travel pattern information first reported in 1992 and collect new information on 24-hour travel patterns. The information gathered will help identify important travel trends by purpose, travel choice, origin and destinations, and the impacts of land use.
2006
As a part of the ongoing data collection program, the CRD initiated a household travel survey in 2006 to coincide with the 2006 Census.
A pre-planning study (2006 CRD Origin Destination Survey Preparation Study ) was undertaken in 2005 to review the 2001 survey methodology and recommend refinements for the upcoming survey. Both the 1992 and 2001 study area included the Victoria Metropolitan Area (VMA) and the Cowichan Valley Region (south of Duncan) — with a main focus on travel patterns for a typical weekday (Monday to Friday). Based on this pre-planning study, the CRD chose to replicate the 2001 survey, but expand the survey to include Salt Spring Island in the study area, and also to include typical Saturday travel patterns for the VMA.
