Capital Choices 2000 Public Forum on Regional Growth

In the Fall of 2000, the Capital Regional District was in the final phase of public consultation on the development of a Regional Growth Strategy to guide growth in the region over the next 25 years.

In order to hear the public's ideas on the proposed alternatives to manage growth in the region, the Regional Board held a public forum on Sept. 8 and 9, 2000, at the Saanich Municipal Hall.

The advertisements for the Forum invited individuals and organizations to provide a one or two page written submission in advance and an oral presentation at the Forum. There were 29 formal presentations as well as 16 speakers during the “open mike” sessions. Others provided written submissions but chose not to give a presentation. In total, over 40 written submissions were received.

All the written submissions received were provided to local elected officials for Capital Summit 2, which was held on September 15th and 16th, 2000. An oral summary of the Regional Forum was given at the Summit by Mayor Alan Lowe of Victoria, Chair of the Regional Planning Committee. A written summary of the recommendations by theme was also provided to participants.

Following is a summary of the presentations.
