Regional Planning
The Regional Planning Division contributes to the development of a sustainable region by providing quality information, research, growth management and transportation modeling.
Regional Information Services Section: tracks growth trends and collects population, demographic, housing, employment and construction information. It also maintains an extensive collection of fact sheets, profiles and publications.
The Regional Growth Strategy Section: oversees the regional sustainability program and develops the regional monitoring and indicators program. This section also manages the RGS and coordinates the regional land use inventories and land use model.
Transportation Modeling & Data Collection Program: maintains the regional transportation model, coordinates the Origin-Destination surveys, undertakes analysis of travel characteristics and supports a comprehensive transportation data collection program.

SEE-IT: Regional Sustainability Monitoring Tool
Regional Planning is launching See-it, an online tool that outlines the Regional Growth Strategy and related sustainability goals, indicators and targets in a more user friendly and engaging format. See-it provides an opportunity to view CRD initiatives related to sustainability and provide comments on them. Targets and initiatives will be updated as the RGS review process moves towards its goal of becoming the Regional Sustainability Strategy;

Transportation Data now available on Google Earth
CRD Regional Planning has released data from its transportation model, using Google Earth to show the 100 busiest bus stops; bicycle, pedestrian and vehicle counts from various points around the region; and congestion levels on major routes for the afternoon peak period.
Regional Pedestrian and Cycling Master Plan Completing Phase 1 
The CRD, its member municipalities and key stakeholders are creating a Regional Pedestrian and Cycling Masterplan (PCMP) to help direct planning and investment decisions to create more opportunities for cycling and walking. Read more ![]()

Urban Futures Demographic Report 
CRD Regional Planning recently commissioned a report from Urban Futures called “ A Context for Change Management in the Capital Regional District”. The report provides a 30-year projection for population, employment and housing growth in this region.

An overview of the role of the CRD in sustainable transportation planning and the desired outcomes of this strategic priority. It also contains travel trends, regional travel facts, and the projects identified in the Travel Choices document which are currently underway.

4th Quarter Building Permit Report Published
At the close of the fourth quarter 2009, construction value for building permits amounted to $173 million. This value is up approximately 29% from the same quarter in the previous year and down 10% from the third quarter in 2009. Along with the permit dollar values increasing this quarter in comparison to the fourth quarter last year, permits issued are up by 147 from this quarter last year.

Starting in 2009, the Planning and Transportation Committee will be considering the Agendas, Minutes and Reports previously considered by the Planning and Protective Services Committee.
2008 RGS State of the Region Report 
The RGS State of the Region Report (2008) is the third RGS monitoring report since the adoption of the Regional Growth Strategy in 2003 and contains data updated to 2007.
This report evaluates the progress made in achieving the objectives included in the eight RGS initiatives. It tracks a set of indicators which highlight gaps and progress made in the implementation of the RGS and provides information to better inform the RGS 5-year review, scheduled for 2009. RGS State of the Region Report - Executive Summary 
A concise reference pamphlet highlighting some key issues examined in detail in the RGS State of the Region Report (2008).
The Regional Growth Strategy facilitates the coordination and cooperation among the local jurisdictions within the Capital Region on issues of shared interest and concern. Its purpose is to promote human settlement that is socially, economically and environmentally healthy and makes efficient use of public facilities and services.

The Community Indicators Network includes organizations publicly reporting indicator work in the capital region. As an active member in the Community Indicators Network, CRD Regional Planning has agreed to host this web page as a medium for disseminating information on local Community Indicators in the form of a downloadable PDF document. RGS Hearing and Amendment Process
The arbitrator reviewed the final proposals from member municipalities and on December 1, 2008, decided in favour of the District of Highlands' proposal to extend the RUCSPA over approximately 82 hectares in the south portion of the District. The RGS amendment bylaw 3443 will go to the Board in February for third reading and adoption. Read more ![]()
