Regional Canada Goose Management Strategy

Goose managemeng at Elk/Beaver Lake Regional Park

The Capital Regional District, in partnership with municipalities, wildlife provincial authorities, Victoria Airport Authority, stakeholders and farmers in the Saanich Peninsula and Metchosin are developing a regional goose management strategy.

Large populations of non migratory Canada geese contribute to heath, economic, and environmental issues affecting municipalities, parks, farmers, businesses, health agencies and airport authorities, to name a few.

Funding

The BC Agriculture, Environment and Wildlife Fund has approved $40,000 for the first phase of preparing a Regional Canada Goose Management Strategy. It includes hiring an expert biologist to complete a data/research component.  Additional funding for phase 2 is contingent upon satisfactory progress on the project implementation. Municipalities and stakeholders are also providing in-kind, administrative and financial support.

Reporting Back

The working group consisting of representation from provincial, municipal, First Nations, environmental, agriculture and a non-government agency is meeting regularly. Meetings and project updates are posted here (right sidebar). Over the next two years, a strategy will be developed which will identify key actions (individual and collective) to address the ongoing management of Canada geese.
