Resistance Training for Seniors
Fear of falling, weight-bearing pain due to arthritis and difficulty in moving from a seated to standing position are often caused by to muscle weakness. Unfortunately these issues are likely to lead to self-imposed restrictions in mobility as well as general decline in functionality among the elderly... Restoration and maintenance of muscle mass should be a primary concern for seniors, so that mobility and normal daily activities can be maintained or improved.
Medical research has been following this topic closely and studies have concluded that healthy elderly people can participate in sustained programs of moderate intensity without injury and with excellent compliance. A program of this nature could impact on gait and postural stability of elderly people. They demonstrated an increase of between 20 to 60 percent in dynamic strength. They also found that the most rapid gain was in the first six weeks (30 percent increase in strength achieved). Dynamic strength continued over a 10-month period.
Other positive physical improvements gained by following a regular fitness program include increased bone density, improved metabolism (due to increase in muscle mass), reduced incidence of depression, and general improved functionality for every day living.
