Recycling, Composting & Garbage
Recycling

The CRD provides curbside Blue Box pick-up in all of the Juan de Fuca Electoral Area except Port Renfrew, where there is a waste transfer station.
The CRD has been collecting recyclables since 1989. Each year we divert over 19,000 tonnes of potential garbage from the landfill.
The CRD's garbage and recycling pages have information on Blue boxes, acceptable materials, how to sort recyclables and other frequently asked questions.

Composting

In 2005 organic material, such as kitchen and yard waste, made up 30% of the garbage entering Hartland landfill. Much of this material is easily compostable, which saves a natural resource, saves landfill space and contributes to sustainability in our region.
Home composting is the most efficient way to manage these materials, and the finished product is a valuable soil amendment. Not only does it add nutrients to the soil, organic matter in compost increases water retention in the soil — yet another way to conserve water and save money!
Yard Waste Landfill Ban
Yard and garden waste isn't garbage, but rather an important natural resource than can be easily composted to benefit our environment and contribute to sustainability in our region.
As of June 1, 2006 yard and garden waste was banned from garbage at Hartland landfill. The Hartland facility will continue to accept source separated yard and garden waste.
In the Juan de Fuca EA, safe burning of excess yard waste (i.e. branches, leaves and detritus) is an option during months when no fire ban is in place. Check with your local fire department for burning restrictions.
Garbage
All refuse pick-up in the Juan de Fuca EA is arranged by individual households, except in Port Renfrew, where there is a refuse transfer station. Disposal companies provide service contracts on a regular billing cycle. Check your local yellow pages.
Household Hazardous Waste
Household Hazardous Waste is any waste from your home that you consider to be dangerous or of which you are unsure. It includes any leftover household product that is marked flammable, corrosive, explosive or poison. Common examples are pesticides, varnishes, paints, cleaners, and batteries.
A comprehensive listing of hazardous wastes is available on the CRD Waste webpages. Drop-off of hazardous wastes at Hartland landfill is free. The CRD organizes collection events for the community of Port Renfrew. There is also a paint exchange program where you can drop off leftover paint and pick up unused paint free of charge.
