Tanning Regulation Bylaw
A Bylaw Regulating Tanning Facilities Across the CRD
The request to consider a tanning regulation bylaw for the Region originated from Dr. Richard Stanwick, Chief Medical Health Officer for the Vancouver Island Health Authority in consultation with the Medical Health Officers Council of BC, the Canadian Cancer Society and dermatologists.
The proposed bylaw is a health measure to establish standards for the safe operation and use of tanning beds. The bylaw is also aimed at promoting and protecting the health of children and youth from a recognized carcinogen by restricting minors under the age of 18 years from the use of ultraviolet (UV) emitting devices in public indoor tanning facilities for cosmetic purposes.
A draft bylaw was approved by the CRD Planning, Transportation and Protective Services Committee on June 23, 2010 and was given first reading by the CRD Board on July 14, 2010. In order to receive input from the public and various stakeholders, public hearings have now been scheduled.

The CRD would also like to invite you to attend one of our four upcoming public hearings. The Chief Medical Health Officer and a Tanning Industry representative will be invited to make submissions at each hearing.
