Emergency Social Services
Emergency Social Services (ESS)
The Heart of Disaster Response
ESS assists residents that are displaced during an emergency or disaster. Throughout the region, teams of dedicated volunteers work with the local emergency programs to provide this service.
What are Emergency Social Services?
ESS are those services provided on a short-term basis (generally for 72 hours) to preserve the emotional and physical well-being of evacuees and response workers in emergency situations. The level of assistance is dependent on the event and can include food and shelter (group lodging), along with other services such as pet care.
During an emergency, people may be required to leave their homes unexpectedly, or to evacuate their neighbourhoods. At these times, the dedicated volunteers of ESS may set up a reception centre in a local facility, providing a warm, safe place for residents to go. At the reception centre, volunteers will assist residents in registering for their services. This information may also, with permission, assist in family reunification during an event.
