After an Emergency
These are general instructions that apply during and after an emergency.
- Try to stay calm
- Check yourself and others for injuries and treat for first aid where necessary.
- Take care of life-threatening injuries first
- Check on neighbours, especially the elderly or those with disabilities
- Confine or secure pets
- Use the battery-operated radio from your emergency kit to listen for information and instructions
- Do not use the telephone except to report a life-threatening injury - lines need to be free for emergency and official use
- if possible, put on sturdy clothing and footwear to protect from any debris
- If you are inside, check the building for structural damage and leave if it seems unsafe. Do not re-enter for any reason.
- Do not turn lights or use matches until you are sure there are no flammable liquids spilled or gas leaks. Use a flashlight to check utilities
- Do not shut off utilities unless they are damaged, leaking, or there is a fire
- Water supplies may be contaminated, so purify your water by boiling it
- Do not use elevators
- Do not flush toilets if you suspect sewer lines are broken
- Stay away from damaged power lines and other damaged areas unless you are asked to give assistance
- Report damaged power, sewer, and water mains to authorities
