Local Governments

Carbon Neutral

As signatories of the BC Climate Action Charter, Local Governments in the Capital Region have committed to becoming carbon neutral. As a part of this commitment they will have to measure their organizational emissions profile, reduce their energy use and GHG emissions and offset their remaining operational emissions to get to net zero.

Greenhouse Gas Reduction Targets in Official Community Plans

Under the Local Government (Green Communities) Statutes Amendment Act (Bill 27, 2008) each local government is required to include targets, policies and actions for the reduction of GHG emissions in their Official Community Plans by May 31, 2010. Below is an update that provides you with a snapshot of the GHG targets for the regions 13 municipalities and 3 Electoral Areas and links to their climate action programs and initiatives.
