Plan Specifications

Submitting Plans with Your Application

How many sets do I need to provide?

You must provide multiple copies of your plans in your application package, which varies according to area.

  • Two sets of plans for Salt Spring Island and the Juan de Fuca Electoral Area
  • Three sets for the Southern Gulf Islands including Pender Island

What are the standards for the drawings?

Plans must be drawn to scale. They must be clear, legible, durable and indicate the nature and extent of the work. Mirror image drawings will not be acceptable. Except for the site plans, single line drawings are also not acceptable.

Are there examples I can look at?

Please refer to the sample drawings provided in the Building Inspection Guide for examples of typical plans. The extent of the work that you propose may require more or less information than is shown in these examples.

What are the scale and measurement standards?

Drawings may be submitted in either metric or imperial units.

Drawings must be drawn to scale. The following scales are recommended:

Plan Type Metric Imperial
Site Plan 1:200 1/16" = 1'
Floor and Foundation Plans 1:50 1/4" = 1'
Elevation Plans 1:100 1/8" = 1'
Section Plans 1:25 1/2" = 1'

Can I produce the drawings myself?

In addition to the information provided on this site, you are advised to contact your Building Inspector early in the process if you are not familiar with preparing construction drawings and wish to produce them yourself. If you have difficulty in this area you may wish to seek the help of a qualified person.
