2024 CRD Regional Parks and Trails Resident Survey

Dec 17, 2024

Victoria, BC– Last week, the Capital Regional District (CRD) Board received the 2024 Capital Regional District Regional Parks & Trails Resident Survey results which continue to reinforce the importance of regional greenspace to residents.

The data in the 2024 CRD Regional Parks & Trails Resident Survey provides helpful insights into how residents are feeling about regional parks and trails, and why they continue to value them as vital pieces of the community.

Survey data shows that 94% of CRD residents think that regional parks are an important fixture in the community, and 84% think the same way about regional trails like the Galloping Goose, and the Lochside and E&N Rail Trail regional trails. The most highly valued benefits of parks, as identified by the survey, include providing spaces for experiencing and conserving natural environments, as well as supporting outdoor recreation. Regional trails are appreciated by residents for their role in recreation, promoting health and well-being, and serving as greenway connections for active transportation across the region.

The 2024 resident survey also gathered new data about reconciliation, access and equity, and climate action and resiliency within existing survey questions about conservation and visitor experience. Key questions from previous survey years were retained to allow comparability to historical survey data. The new information from 2024 will support goals, priorities and principles identified within the updated 2022-2032 Regional Parks and Trails Strategic Plan

The information collected in 2024 and in subsequent surveys will help guide decision-making and inform ongoing sustainable planning initiatives, and also give the CRD a better understanding of residents’ views, needs, experiences and levels of satisfaction in regional parks over time, to help serve residents better. The CRD delivers regional, sub-regional and local services to 13 municipalities and three electoral areas on southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. Governed by a 24-member Board of Directors, the CRD works collaboratively with First Nations and government partners to enable sustainable growth, foster community well-being, and develop cost-effective infrastructure while continuing to provide core services to residents throughout the region.
